Dizzy

She felt like an awkward teen around Demon, offering him something to drink, and even offering to make him a sandwich. She could tell that he was a bit nervous around her too, and she wondered what that was all about.

“Mason said you two are in the same club together,” she said, trying for some semblance of a conversation.

“Um, yeah,” Demon said. Yeah, that didn’t go as planned. Two whole words didn’t make for stimulating conversation.

“He said that you’re the guy that they call when they need some help or are in trouble,” she said, trying again.

“Yep,” Demon agreed, nodding his head.

“You’re not much of a talker, are you?” she asked.

“Nope,” Demon admitted. She sighed and grabbed the television remote, turning on the tv. It was going to be a long ass day if he was going to only give her one-word responses. If he didn’t want to talk, then, they wouldn’t talk.

“How about if I make us something to eat?” he asked.

“Suit yourself,” she grumbled. “The kitchen is all yours.” She wanted to ask him questions—the first being if he actually could cook but knowing that one-word answers were all that she’d get back from him, had her changing her mind. Dizzy pretended to be interested in the television show that she had turned on about fishing.

“You into fishing?” he asked.

“No,” she muttered, changing the channel. She found an old episode of an eighties sitcom and settled into the sofa.

“So, you and Mason?” Demon asked from the kitchen. Of course, he wanted to make conversation now that she had found an old show that she used to love as a kid.

“Yes,” she said, giving him one of his one-word answers.

“How did that happen, exactly?” he asked. Dizzy looked at him like he had lost his mind, asking her a question like that, and he just smiled back at her. “You can even add in the dirty parts,” he said. “I don’t mind at all.”

Dizzy couldn’t help but laugh. He was pretty good at breaking the ice, even if he wasn’t good at answering her questions. Maybe he was the kind of guy who liked to ask all the questions and not have anyone pry into his private life. Well, she was a tit-for-tat kind of girl and that just wasn’t going to fly with her.

“Um, he kind of rescued me from some guy who was in the Ghosts. He came into the diner where I work while my friend, Hilde was being held at gunpoint. The guy was looking for me and she wouldn’t tell him who I was.”

“Good friend,” Demon grunted.

“Best friend,” Dizzy corrected. “Hilde is one of the best people that I know, well, besides Mason now. He came in there and talked the guy down—he saved us, really.”

“That’s Mason for you, always the hero. I guess that’s why he’s so good at his job,” Demon said.

“What do you do, you know, besides working for your MC?” she asked.

He chuckled, “I don’t work for my MC,” he said.
